I took Prozac & Xanex for anxiety attacks... my dr just left me on it for about 8 ys because I had depression problems from the post tramatic event, I had a dramatic personality change, but because I had been on it for such a long time they decided to put me on Effexor, it was ok at first but now it is as though I have grown immune to it. I would definately talking to your dr about Prozac.
I'm assuming that you're discussing this with your psychiatrist about making a switch? The tetracylics - like mirtazapine - can be very effective. And, if you have anxiety, mirtazapine can work well in addressing this, too.
Only your Dr. can determine your schedule with the dosages and med switch...
But......I would definitely recommend getting a good psychotherapist to work with. I know that when I worked with one in addition to my AD, I got my very best results.
It seems many times that an AD alone just does not do it, and the research is compelling that the very best results come with both, particularly in the moderate-to-severe depressions.
I hope that your search will grant you the peace and happiness that you deserve. It's not easy, as you know, but taking this next step will hopefully bring you better results.
You may want to consider a different combo.
Effexor no longer works for me either and Welbuterin never did.
I am currently taking a Tri-cyclic Antidepressant (Nortriptilyne) and I have to say it's really been working pretty good over the last year or so. I wore myself out on all the SSRI's and have found this older Tri-Cyclic to work much better.
The side effects aren't really much different either.
I am also taking 30Mgs of Lexapro per day, just for that little extra punch. The combo seems to be working well.
I have also heard some good things about Remeron which is a Tetracyclic antidepressant. These drugs have a very good response rate in comparison to many of the newer AD's such as Zoloft, Effexor, Cymbalta, ect....
You may want to trade up. If you do decide to go with Nortriptilyne, you must first wash out the Effexor. You'll have to taper off slow until you get to about 75Mgs or less of the Effexor before introducing the Nortriptiline as these two drugs don't play well together.
Once you start the Nortrip then stop the Effexor all together. In a couple weeks the Nortrip will take over where the Effexor left off. First you have to taper down on that Effexor. You don't want to start the Nortrip until you get that Venlafaxine level down to a minimum.
I ain't gonna lie to you. It's a rough transition. Your going to feel like absolute garbage until the Nortrip kicks in.
Good luck.
