Effexor and Ultram

by HelloKelle, Jun 17, 2008 01:08PM
Hello,

I have been prescribed Ultram for pain and I currently take Effexor XR 225mg. per day. Is anyone else taking this combo of meds and how is it working for you? Walgreens wouldn't fill my script b/c they said the combo causes seizures. However, my psych said that it wouldn't. I'M CONFUSED!!

Hello,

I can answer part of your question.  IF I were you I would ask my doctor to prescribe another pain killer if you need it.  Ultam is a scary scary drug. It is a synthetic opiate (hence pain killer) yet it also affects your serotonin levels.  This drug can cause seizures and is highly addictive.

Effexer affects your serotonin and norephinephirne levels (at a low dose it affects serotonin).  SO you could potentially have a problem with too much serotonin which causes sickness (not seizures that i am aware of).  But as I said....Ultram can. I would RUN from this drug.  It is NOT the best choice while taking antidepressants.

Doctors do not thing Ultram is addictive but read the substance abuse forum.  It is highly addictive and people have seizures on it.

GOODLUCK to you and I hope this helped,

Well, Geez. I eat anywhere from 400 mg to 1.2 grams of tramadol just about every day, and have been doing so for many months straight, and haven't had a seizure yet. I also question that it's necessarily addictive. About a month ago (? - no sense of time)  I was put in the booby hatch for observation for five nights and four days, and didn't have withdrawal symptom one.  It was suggested to me that the booby hatch drugs may have masked withdrawal, but I was faking it when taking them so they all went out in the trash bins. I'm sure you know that tramadol is ultram without the ibuprophen or whatever they mix with tramadol to make ultram. That's just the way it affects me, though, I'm sure that as with most other drugs it affects different people different ways.
