Effexor vs Welbutrin

by jess91, Jan 17, 2008 12:43AM
I was on Welbutrin then switched to Effexor...  I have been struggling with alcohol issues while on the effexor but not while on welbutrin.  Is welbutrin the better med?

Struggling with alcohol is one of the side effects you are supposed to report to you Dr. Whichever one works on you is the better one.

Actually, I am on Effexor and Wellbutrin. I've been on the Wellbutrin for several years and have had NO problems at all... didn't drink much alcohol & the weight loss that I noticed was awesome :-}... now... the Effexor... that's a different story... I drank constantly, probably to help with the constant headaches... don't know but I can tell you this... I have been trying to wein off of this **** for 6 mos... and now that I'm down to 1/4 of a 37.5 pill every other day... I cannot even drink alcohol... sounds crazy, I know, but it's the truth. I went from drinking EVERYDAY.... to not having a drink in the past 4 months or so... the thought of drinking makes me nausous... well, that could also be this horrible medicine that I cannot seem to get off of!!!
Good Luck.....

Wellbutrin did nothing for me and effexor worked really well.  I think they are both 'good' for some people.  That is the nature of these drugs.

I was on Effexor for about six months.  It did seem to help, but I gained 30 pounds while taking it.  I am now on Welbutrin and have been taking it for three months.  It is doing very well with the depression and I've also lost 20 pounds which is a big plus.  As for drinking alcohol with either of them, I don't drink so I'm sure about that.
