Help??? Depression 22 yr old femail

Hi there,
My names Alicia, I have been feeling really tired, overwhelmed and get stressed and worry really easy. I find that my mood will be really down alot of the time ... [More] and i have so many events coming up that i would normally be excited about but i am not until that day. Latley i have been excersizing alot more and that helps a little but still feeling really unmotivated expecially during the day. I work full time and i like my jobs in terms of money but hate the repetiveness. I have lost touch with my friends and i get nervous meeting new people (not overly) I am normally an out going girl that everyone loves but latley i just feel meh! I suffer from acne which i am on yaz for, been on it for 7 days and i know its not the yaz as i have felt this way for 2 years. My doc prescibed me 10mg prozac and i am scared to take it because of all the horror stories. I just want to know if i will still be myself? I am normally a bubbly, caring, person but i get really down. And i do get anxiety occasionly and fear stops me from doing the things i want. I have a partner and i feel that i get more scared in a relationship even though he adores me. I have a beautiful family and i love being around them, we are extremely close. I live in a beautiful house on the water, But i just feel like my thoughts and self doubt and negative worrying stop me from doing things. Im not the type that can't get out of bed either...I could be up home having a great time laughing and then ill have a feeling of sadness come over =( I have a 7cm cyst on my left ovary and acne which gets me down aswell and hate my breakouts and find it hard to loose weight so i know that gets my confidence down too. Please help, my doctor is ok but feel he doesn't have time to answer everything. Thanks Alicia =)

Hello and welcome!

It definitely sounds like you are suffering from depression and some anxiety.

The good thing is, you have already reached out for help, which is a very important first step!  Definitely continue the exercising!  That helps so much by releasing natural "feel good" endorphins.  You'd probably feel worse if you weren't exercising regularly.

As for the Prozac, don't fear it.  Look at it as a new beginning.  I understand that a lot of people have reservations about taking a medication, but meds have helped so many people (myself included).  You'll just never know until you try.  Try to resist the urge of researching TOO much, because, like you said...there are a lot of horror stories out there.  While a percentage of people who try meds have an awful experience, many more have positive, life changing ones, and everyone is different.  People with good experiences are much less likely to get out there and write about it, which is why sometimes it seems that all you can find are negative stories.  Allow yourself to have your own unique experience.  Remember that it can take 4-6 weeks before you really start noticing improvement with these meds...you have to be patient (as hard as that is).  If possible, try to have your medication maintained by a psychiatrist, they are better versed in how these meds work, and what to expect.  Also, insist on therapy, the combo of meds AND therapy increases success rates significantly...versus just meds or therapy alone.

Keep doing what you're doing and start moving forward with treatment.  It's okay to need help with this, you don't have to suffer...you can get the joy back in your life.  We all know what it is like to be in your shoes, and we care.  Come back and update us, and use us as an added support system.  It's amazing how much of a relief it is to be among people who TRULY understand.

Take care...hang in there!
