Help me!

I have been depressed for about 4 years now. Not on and off, it is more like sometimes I can overpower my depression with something that is going on, but it is never gone. I think I know why I am so depressed, I just cant get over anything. I am so sensative and that doesnt help me at all. I am only 18 years old and I can barely get out of bed. If I dont sleep at least 14 hours a night I feel so tired I need naps. I am kind of too scared to go to my doctor because I dont want him to think Im just another teen who feels sorry for myself. I just want to feel better. What can i do
?

When your depression is affecting your daily life, "I can barely get out of bed", its time to do something about. Depression can happen at any age and for various reasons. You do need to see a physician to discuss this with. If you find that he/she does not take you seriously, find another physician. If you feel awkward talking to your physician, than look into mental health centers that may be near you. Your doctor can even refer one for you. You definitely need some help. Healthcare people should take you seriously. The fact that you acknowledge there is a problem and want help is the first step to getting better. Depression is no longer a stigma of some "crazy" person. You are not that, but a human.  I do wish you well, and please get the help you need, you deserve to feel human again.

Hi.  Your depression is making you want to sleep like this, and it can make us very sensitive to everything.  You need to see a psychiatrist for an evaluation, and so the two of you can determine what course of treatment would be best for you.  I recommend a psychiatrist in caseyou need medication, and they are much more knowlegable with these types of meds than a GP.  They can also refer you to the proper therapist. Depression normally has a root cause and if there are things that you have never dealt with properly and are still bothering you, therapy can help you to work thru all of this.  Never hesitate to see a doctor for any reason!  We hear from a lot of teens, so you are not alone and the psychiatrists see a lot of teens. Nobody will think you are just feeling sorry for yourself, as this is affecting your day-to-day life and that indicates a problem.  Seek help so you can get your life back.  You have a lot of living to do!!!  Take care!
