How long does Depression last if brought on by contraceptives?

I am a 27 year old who started taking a progesterone only birth control pill May of 2009. By August I was severly depressed. I didn't want to do anything that I enjoyed doing, suicide seemed like a welcome relief, getting up for work was a struggle and I didn't know how I felt about my boyfriend of 2 years among many other symptoms. I stopped taking the birth control and by November 2009 I was tired of fighting the depression on my own so I started taking Lexapro. I have been taking 2 /10mg pills a day and am still feeling the depression however it is not near as bad. I no longer have thoughts of suicide and am able to enjoy the things I once did. I have more energy and do not experience the racing thoughts like I did when the depression was really bad. I am still fighting with getting my feelings back. My feelings for my boyfriend now fiance are coming back but my true feelings are coming back very very slowly. I am just wondering how long it usually takes for someone on medication to come out of a major depression that was caused from taking oral contraceptives? Also is there anything else I should be doing to speed the recovery time?

Contraceptives can cause depression?! WTF, I had no idea. I'm gonna start figuring out if mine have been exacerbating my depression at all. I swear, I'm gonna start from scratch one of these days with no drugs or hormones, eat purely organic and healthy food and watch; I'll probably be right as rain.

You need to contact your prescribing doctor, as it sounds like the Lexapro is not working at 100% for you.  This is common and sometimes it's just trial and error as to what will work for us.  These types of medications reach a therapeutical level in 4-6 weeks, so you definitely need to contact your doctor.  I know birth control pills can cause mood swings, but have not heard of them causing full blown depression.  Talk to your doctor, you should be feeling much better by now.  Take care....
