Initial side effects of Trazondone

by Honeybee4u2c, Dec 07, 2006 12:00AM
When you first start taking Trazodone for depression and insomnia, does it make you slightly more depressed for awhile?  How long if so?  I just started taking it 2 nights now and I feel slightly more down.  I was weepy this morning, could be I have a cold too and don't feel good.

I hated trazadone.  It actually increased my anxiety.  I had a severe panic attack on it.

I don't want to second-guess your doctor but I will presume that Trazodone was prescribed as a sleep aid and not as an anti-depressant.   Trazodone is a very poor anti-depressant, its cousin, Nafazadone (Serzone) is struggling to stay on the market as a viable AD because unlike Trazadone, it is not as sedating and has an equally poor track record in the treatment of depression.

It has been years since I prescribed Desyrel and the most common complaint or comment was:
It was very sedating
The medication made patients feel groggy for days increasing feelings of depression.
Tiredness, fatigue, apathy.

This probably is not the first AD to be prescribed for you.  Perhaps your doctor is just trying out everything he/she can.    There are so many good anti-depressants that I find it bewildering that anyone would still regard Trazodone as a viable AD.

If the drug helps you to sleep at night then take comfort that much of the initial sedation will wear off over the next few weeks and you won't feel quite as tired and foggy during the day.

Good luck.

I think Doctors who prescribe trazadone dont believe in controlled substances.  I was prescribed trazadone for sleep instead of an ambien and it worked horribly on all ends of the spectrum.  Hate it!!!

My doctor did prescribe it for insomnia and a slight AD.  I looked it up online and it said it was an AD, so...I thought I would ask here to see what I could find out.  I have not ever had any sort of AD's prescribed, but I do suffer from insomnia more than depression.  I want to give it a week or two to see if the "down" feeling goes away. So sorry to have misled.

I love Trazadone.  I took ambien, lunesta, etc.  Nothing worked until I took this medication.  I take 200 mg. a night, it has helped me with getting a good nights sleep.  I suggest you start on a low dose of 25 mg. and work up if you need to.
