Hey Harvey576,

Do expect that you may feel a little "crappy" for the first 2 to 3 weeks on the Fluoxotine.

Some people (myself included) often feel a but nasty for the first couple weeks on any SSRI like this.

Give it a solid 6 full weeks before you make a decision on it's effectiveness. This is especially true of Fluoxotine because it has a very long half life. Much longer than some other SSRI's.

Basicaly, that means it takes longer to build up to theraputic levels, and it also takes longer to wash from the system should you ever choose to stop.

Do expect to get a few side effects. Almost everyone does.
If the side effects become very severe, then call you doctor.

By in large most people tolerate this drug fairly well. You shouldn't have a problem.

Good luck and remember...... 6 weeks before any improvement.

I just started taking Prozac and I'm doing pretty well. It's been almost 5 weeks now.  I had pretty bad headaches the first week or so, but they did stop.  I had been having suicdial feelings every day for weeks and that has gone away.
The first two weeks I did feel like I had more "pep" but I've had some stressors recently that kind of put a damper on that.  My doc said the other day that Prozac tends to eliminate the "most serious" (like suicicdal feelings) symptoms first and my depression still may lift some more.  Actually I can't believe how the suicidality has gone. Basically just wanted to let you know someone out here is doing okay.  I've not had any other side effects that I've noticed.  The last time I took it, it worked like a miracle.

Hey Harvey,

I am new to this too but don;t worry about any side effects after a week. Even though these people make each drug look like it will kill you these symptoms seldom if atall ever happen. Not to say they don;t. But did you ever read possible side effects of asprine. Now there is a real horror show but we all know it seldom happens an is well woth the risk..

All drugs are is a controlled amount of poison, lol. Thats true put the dose is extremly low if you follow the instructions.

Paxil is just a bit better then prozac but in the same family. Both are wonderful drugs.
