Yea, after my wife and child noticed the weight gain they were like, OMG!

Kids never hold anything back. My 7 year old said "Daddy you used to be a lot smaller, what happened?"

Funny thing was that after that, I had reduced my diet to 900 Calories a day and I was still putting on weight! After that I was worried if it would ever stop.

900 Calories a day is not a lot for a man. I was shocked when after weeks on that diet I was still gaining weight.

Remeron would be a great medication for people that have trouble gaining weight. They should prescribe it more for that purpose.

I want to add for the most part I've always mananged to be rather average weight. There was a couple years where inactivity crept my weight up, but for the most part I have a fairly good metabolism. For Remron to make me put on weight rapidly like that was unreal like Hensley258 said.

For me: Weight gain like Hensley258 said. I gained like 10-15 pounds in the matter of a couple months and really not a whole lot of difference with my eating habits. I craved chocolate a lot though.

The sedative effect for me only worked the first few weeks of taking, but it seemed like my mind could over-power it and I'd stay up anyway. Looking back, I had to have been hypomanic. I was rapidly flowing with ideas, and I was writing stuff like crazy, just about any idea that came to mind. I was writing all kinds of things in notepad, word pad, and ms word. (I also interestingly had little interest in being active on the internet.)

There may have been other reasons I quit taking it, but the weight gain was the main one. Obesity and health related problems run high in our family. I didn't want to put myself at risk.

I am taking Remeron.  One reason it was chosen was because I lost my appetite due to gallbladder trouble and didn't regain much appetite after having my gallbladder out.  It has helped me regain my appetite.  I've been on it about 8 days and I've gained a couple of pounds and can eat just about anything.  It's really helping me, but if you are not looking to put on weight, you won't like this medicine.  Plus I need about 10 hours of sleep on it right now.  I am told that when we go up to the next (higher) dose, it will change from sedating to more energy producing, which is really weird.

Remeron has the occasional side effect of lowering white blood cell count, which makes some people unable to fight viruses and such.  I'm told this is uncommon, though.

I took Remeron for 6 months because SSRI's and SNRI's were not working for me anymore.

I will be honest with you. Remeron is the king Daddy of weight gain antidepressants. It makes Paxil look like a diet pill.

It works ok, but not as good as I had expected even at higher dosages. I gained 40Lbs in the first 2 months on it and kept gaining after that.

It will (at first) knock you on your butt when you first start it. About an hour after dosage it has a massive sedative effect that lasts about 5 hours, This is why Remeron can only be taken before bed time.

This side effect fades a bit in a couple months, but is still a side effect I did not like.

I found it to be a very dirty antidepressant. I have taken 15 different Psycotropic medications in 17 years and Remeron had the worst side effects of them all.

The weight gain is unreal. I am a fit man and never had a problem with gaining weight, but taking that Remeron is like wanting to get fat.

If your looking for a Tri-cyclic antidepressant, may I suggest Nortriptilyne instead. It is more effective and has much less side effects.

For me 75Mgs a day of Nortriptilyne did the trick for two full years before it pooped out.

I took it and could not tolerate it but it was to control a neurological disability (tardive dyskinesia) as an experimental use and what it caused in me (mania) could easily have been set off because I have the bipolar end of schizoaffective. It would not cause this for someone with depression. The other effects I had which were overeating and sedation might be more common. But for an informed answer look up "Depression Central" which is a good resource and would have a clinically accurate but easy to understand answer as to all anti-depressents, mood stabilizers and their side effects (and much other useful information).
