Resperdol

My 82 yrd old mother was having delusions about once a week but nothing that concerned us as it was not hurting her and we overlooked these delusions as she was still enjoying a very good quality of life...reading,,,visiting family members, loved watching TV.......her doctor put her on Resperdol and within 4weeks she went into a deep depression, lost more that 1/10th of her body weight ( now under 90 lbs)....wants to die...lays in the prenatal position...will not eat or drink or walk or talk.......has anyone else had this or seen this reaction to this drug.....she has slight dementia, past heart attact and stroke...but was in great physical shape prior to resperdol....any comments?

Speak to a gerentologist. It states (including on the standard medication notices right here that come the prescription labels) that antipsychotics are to be used with extreme caution in people who are elderly with dementia. I would suggest speaking to a neurologist and gerentologist. They could decide specifically what to use but I know for many elderly people Namenda works well on age related dementia.
