Weaning of Prozac

Weaning of Prozac

I have been taking Prozac and Amitriptyline for 10+ years. I would like to wean off these drugs, which would be the best one to start weaning from and how much should I start with for the least amount of side affects?

Namaste,

First of all, I don't understand why you would want to stop taking your medication without the direction of your doctor.

Do not stop using amitriptyline without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely. Stopping this medication suddenly could cause you to have unpleasant side effects.

Prozac, on the other hand will produce fewer side effects when reduced gradually, but again I recommend you consult with your doctor.

Additionally, not knowing what dosages you are currently taking it would be impossible to recommend a schedule for discontinuing the medications.

This information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your physician or other healthcare professional.
