Wellbutrin, Celexa and Sexual Side Effects

by Papa44, Nov 29, 2007 08:12PM
Diagnosed with major depression and suicidal.  I was put on Celexa 20 mg and started therapy.  Able to maintain an erection but could not orgasm.  Switched to Welbutrin SR 25 mg.  Solved sexual side effects but some symptoms of depression returned.

Dr. added Celexa at 10 mg to Wellbutrin and I am feeling much better, but haved avoided having sex with my wife because I'm worried about sexual side effects.  I'm trying to set my mind at ease, anxiety will on cause more sexual problems.  Should adding the Wellbutrin and reducing the dose of Celexa solve the orgasm problem?

Here's a tip for to combat the sexual side effects of the SSRI's, for example, lexapro, prozac, zoloft, celexa and others: Ask your doctor for a prescription for buspar..or buspirone, the generic name. It completely reversed the sexual side effects my husband was experiencing to the point where he had to take down the dose of buspar. He said he felt like a teenager again, he's been on SSRI's since his early 20s and he's now 39. It takes about 4-6 weeks to start working, but it's worth a try. It mechanism could be that it targets a specific serotonin receptor that is also affected by the SSRIs. it's prescribed sometimes for anxiety but it's known better as a supplement to the SSRI..
I don't know if it will work for everyone but again it's worth a try. The side effects of buspar are minimal also, in case you were wondering  (Papa44-i just copied this from a post of mine from earlier..
this will help your orgasm problem..I'm willing to bet on it..I would just drop Wellbutrin and go back to 20 mg Celexa (if that was working) and supplement with buspar instead..I'm a happy wife because of it! ;)  )

this is a post from revolution health
"Useful in Sexual Dysfunction I believe (though im no doctor) but some sexual dysfunctions have to do with a chemical in the brain called Serotonin. If a person has alot of this chemical in a certain area or receptor, it can cause sexual dysfuntion. This is most common with people that take Anti-depressants. While anti-depressants raise Serotonin throughout your whole brain, too much serotonin in this one receptor causes sexual dysfunction. This just happens to be the same receptor that Buspar affects. Buspar lowers serotonin in this area which also has to do with anxiety. Buspar is an anti-anxiety medication but can be used for Sexual Dysfunction. Just a process of trial and error.
In my experience, I take 300 mgs of Luvox. I got to where I couldnt ejaculate. My psychiatrist put me on buspar, after a while i started more and more to get my sex drive back and the ability to ejaculate.

He explains it a lot better than I did..
