Wellbutrin question

Hi there,

I was recently prescribed Wellbutrin.  The first prescription was generic budeprion 150mg SR, twice a day.  I took those for about a week then switched over to name brand Wellbutrin XL 150 mg just ONCE a day.  I am told that I am still getting the same dose of medication in a 24 hour period, but just can't get my head around the dosage numbers.  I see it as 150 mg every 12 hours on the generics, thus adding up to 300 mg in a 24 hour period.  With the name brand I see it as 150 mg per 24 hour period.  Am told it has to do with the way the med is released?

Can anyone help me with this?  Thanks!

Hello there,

SR means sustained release and XL means extended release. Normally SR is intended for use twice a day and XL once a day. It is not the case for all the medications tho but it is for budeprion. Since you said you were recently prescribed this medication i guess your doctor will put you on Wellbutrin XL 300mg if needed.

Best regards,
M4
