amitriptylene- can it help pain?

by Haileys Mom, Jan 10, 2007 12:00AM
I've been on Zoloft for 5 days and have terrible nausea, despite taking pill around 7 pm, two hours before bed, and after eating my supper. I called the Dr. to ask if I could switch to Elavil, to see if it was better and to see if it had more of an effect on my shoulder/arm/scalp pain.

Does this sound like a realistic approach or should I give the Zoloft more time? I'm unsure what to do now. I'm a mess with worry over all my aches/pains/twinges that have invaded my body for the past 5 months although dr.'s would have you believe that this is all caused by "overuse" or "RSI". I would love to believe that, but I just don't know. I can't leave my job. We need 2 incomes now that we have a new house and baby that was a surprise (a miracle, actually!)And I can't afford to take a pay cut. I have no other skills other than this job, which is specialized that if I quit I could never find anything like it.

Is Elavil safe? Can I be on it long term? I am 39 years old, female and always thought to be healthy and fit. My morning routine is becoming one of panic, pain and fear.

I have had a chest xray, shoulder xray, 2 complete blood work ups, diagnostic mammo, echo, 2 EKG's and now I'll be getting an EMG, as per my request. I doubt that will show anything though.

I've taken Elavil in the past for pain management after a serious car accident.  It worked wonders for me.  I took it at bedtime as instructed by my physician.  I was able to return to work much quicker than I anticipated and I too was skeptical.

I have had problems in the past with sleeping, I took Ambien and it worked as far as slept buy I found myself being aggressive the next day so I told my doctor and he gave me amitiptylene. It was wonderful!! I would take it at night and get some good restful sleep but, I gained weight so I stopped taking it and now I am back to not sleeping and depressed because of the weight gain.  Any suggestions?
