can this be celexa

can this be celexa

my son started taking celexa in mid-october 2007, and he attempted suicide (never had before)on october 30th.  he went to a treatment center where the psychiatrist talked us in to keeping him on the med---he said that my son would have to just "throw the suicidal thoughts out." and that he would get better.  About 2 months later another OD--accidental, but????  Then, 2 days ago (feb 2008) he blacked out and totalled his car.  he was free of drugs and alcohol, and the only med he was on was celexa.  I AM TERRIFIED!!! he is scared to go off the antidepressant, and I am scared for him to stay on them.  can this be an adverse reaction.  he HAD taken nyquil the night before his accident, but it had been about 15 hours.

first I would change doctors. you just dont throw out suicide thoughts without lots of therapy. Nopw is you son faithful about taking his meds? I am on celexa and it got rid of my suicidal thoughts. but I take it faithfully He may not be on the right dose.I will keep in my prayers.

There is small, rare, side effect of Celexa that suicidal thoughts will increase.  This is a rare side effect that comes with most anti-depressants.  The doctor does sound rather remiss about the situation and your son should probably see a different doctor, as previously commented by others.  Also, the doctor should recognize that three life-threatening events have occurred in only 5 months.  You mentioned your son is scared to go off the medication.  Help him as much as you can and show you support him.  It is very scary to not understand your own body and what's going on.  Please really do seek out another doctor.

Best Wishes, Alisha.

One other thing.  Mixing cold medicine and medication is never a good idea.  Think about it as mixing alcohol with medication.  But, it does depend on the dose, the strength of the cold medicine, and what kind of medication one takes.  I don't know if the Nyquil affected him, but its always a good idea to keep this fact in mind.

Best Wishes, Alisha.
