coping skills for depression

I have severe bouts of depression almost daily that come for no reason. It's a crushing sadness.  I cannot read, walk, or even get up from bed, it totally freezes me up.  I just sit in bed rocking myself until I feel better.  I am on meds for depression.  My usual coping mechanism is binge eating but last night I had the worst bout of depression, and ran out and bought my usual goodies and fell asleep.  Usually when I do this I binge and fall asleep, and wake up refreshed and better mentally, but last night I awoke with the same debilitating depression. I have tried many counselors, therapists, and talked myself out to friends and family.  What other coping mechanisms are there that I can try?

For me it's exercise and keeping my mind busy. This is becoming debilitating for you and if you can't get out of bed, what can you do?  It sounds like your meds are not working and your doctor needs to know this.  If they worked at one time, your body may have built up a tolerance for them and you need to have the dosage tweaked or a change of medication completely.  What you're doing is "emotional eating" and this too will catch up with you and create health problems.  I get the crushing sadness first thing every morning and I immediately jump out of bed and get my day going.  I rarely feel like getting out and walking so I make myself and I do feel much better during and after. For me it's always pushing myself to do things and once I get started I'm fine. I often awaken during the night with this sadness as well, if I am unable to go back to sleep I just get up and do something to occupy my mind. The worst thing you can do is stay in bed, get up and do your best to do things.  But first contact your doctor and let him know your meds aren't working, and go from there.  Good luck and take care.
