depression and epilepsy

by cdcoffey, May 01, 2008 09:51AM
Will medication help depression that is not continuos. I am an epileptic and 99% of my seizures occur when I am depressed or worried. Things depress me about twice a month, for two or three days. I believe if I didn't get depressed my seizures would be under control. Does depression medicine help ocassional depression?

Mmm, I don't think that the effect of an antidepressant would kick in in the matter of 2-3 days. It takes a longer while than that to get effects of it.

I am no one to diagnose, but have you considered that with most epileptic seizures there occurs a chemical change in the brain, leading to the seizures? Could it be possible that that chemical change also triggers the sadness?

Do you have medications for your epilepsy? I would think you have that, but I'm just asking to make sure I don't misunderstand you.

Check back!

Yes, I am on three seizure medicines. This medicine controls the seizures until something upsets me or gets me depressed. Then the seizures begin.

One thing I forgot to say is the spells of depression occur either when I begin thinking how much I want out on my own but can't because of the epilepsy or anything else depresses me.
