how do i help my mum?

My mum is depressed, and as far as i know, she has been for years. It's only recently she's been to the doctor though. She got some pills, and i looked them up on the internet and saw they were anti-depressants, Citalopram i think they were called. I just want to know how i can help her, make her feel better and happy.Maybe people who suffer from depression can tell me things that people do that help?  Thanks :)

Hi,

The best thing you can do for your mom is to just be very understanding.  The way your mom is acting (depressed) is not the real person.  Depression is just like anyother kind of disease and with the right treatments can be controlled and even cured.

Yes, Citalopram is an anti-depressant.  Your Mom should get some relief from that within about a month, but everyone reacts differntly to this class of drugs.  Talk therapy would also be a good idea for you mom.  Anti-depressant only controll  they symptons of depression ,CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) will help get to the root of it.

Your mom probably feels like she is in this big hole with no way out.  They future may look bleak to her and she probably views her past as one of sorrow and regret...that's what depression can do to a person.  Good luck, and this is a very good place for you to come for some insight.
