hi there--
that's a heavy duty question...
There can be different causes.  Some people think that depression is mainly a chemical imbalance in the bodies bio-chemistry.  This can be the case.  But I think it's safe to say that it is a body/mind/spirit issue.  Talking to a good counselor could shed some light on the causes.  There could be issues from childhood, etc... negative ways of thinking...
or more spiritual levels.  I don't know your age, but sometimes the things that young people are into these days can contribute to depression such as dark music, or occult things.  Sometimes the issues that cause depression are simple, but they persist for years.  Look at it this way--  Someone says, "you can have this car, but it doesn't run."  So, you try to start it and it doesn't start and you start to believe that what they said was true.  So you park it for 5 years.  Then along comes someone who says, "maybe it's just out of gas."  And you say, "but the gas guage says half-full."  And they say, "maybe the guage isn't working."  So, you put 5 gallons of gas in the truck and it fires right up.
Simple problem, with a simple solution, but it persisted for 5 years.
Depression can be like this.

Some issues like this are called "bondage" or emotional/spiritual bondage.  They are hidden strongholds of negative influences, influences that can lock up issues.

There's amazing power in words, both positive and negative, and the way we think about things.  Sometimes people get into a negative loop and everything they say is negative.  I was like this for a long time.  Sometimes it takes a chemical help to break this cycle.  Some people say that this alone helped them.  This was not the case in my life.  I call this "complex bondage."  It takes a team-effort to break free sometimes.  But just like with the truck out of gas, the solutions can be relatively simple once they are found.  Even 10 years or longer of serious issues can be resolved in a relatively short period of time with the right counseling strategy, medications and lifestyle changes.

There are some amazing success stories in the book, "The Bondage Breaker," by Neil T. Anderson.  It's a Christian recovery book, but it's different in that it is very practical.
Neil was a rocket scientist at one time so he's got some new insights on things.

The main thing is never try to fight depression alone--
