low semen volume using Celexa

by Gold 1, Jan 22, 2007 12:00AM
I have been on Celexa for a pretty long time now (Good results) and I notice that my semen volume is very low. Is this a possible side effect or should I be worried?. Any help would be appreciated.

You're experiencing a medication side-effect called Retrograde Ejaculation.  It is fairly common and not the least bit harmful.  What happens normally when a man has an orgasm is that semen is ejected solely through the penis by way of the urethra and out of the body; with retrograde ejaculation some of the semen is pushed into the bladder while the rest leaves the body normally.   Both SSRI's and TCA's can cause this condition which is always temporary and harmless and will discontinue if you stop taking the Celexa.

As a matter of debate, some doctors think that there may be a fertility issue with RE; meaning that you might have trouble fathering a child but others disagree.    Every time a man ejaculates, over a billion sperm can be present in his semen.  A lower semen count MAY mean lower sperm count, but when talking about billions of sperm, what difference does a couple hundred million sperm really matter?   And, if you're not looking to have kids in the near future and the Celexa is working for you then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
