I've taken St. John's Wort for depression. It worked very well for that, but I had to stop taking it because it was blurring my vision. Turns out SJW has a chemical in it that is photo-reactive that accumulates in the eyes. When we are in a brightly-lit place, the chemical reacts and causes at least mild damage to the eyes. In my case, it was just too much of a risk, so I stopped taking it, and will never take it again.
I have since switched to 5htp. This seems to work at least as well as the SJW, without any discernible side-effects. My own personal strategy is to only take it when needed over a period of 3-4 weeks.
Hi
5HTP converts to seretonin if taken in the morning.

I am not alowwed to be on any antidepressants in the summer time as they make me a little "too happy" or manic. I wouldn't mind the euphoria but I hate when I come back down.....yikes, scary : )
Post your question on the Alternative Therapies forum. They have some very knowledgable people who can answer any question you have. Take care!
