support groups

Does anyone know off any support groups you can go to in Belfast?to talk to people with the same depression illness as me?there doesnt seem to be any support groups,depression isnt like a cold we can just get rid off,or switch it off,or snap out off it,like some people think we can,because they cant c our illness they think its not there,thanx x

Hello, I live in the UK and belong to Depression Alliance who have support groups.  I don't know if there is anything similar in Ireland.  You can ask your doctor's surgery if they know of any support groups, or your local library may have notices about help.  I think you will find there is help out there, but you have to look for it yourself I am afraid.  

I have never hidden my illness from anyone.  I am not ashamed of it.  People with diabetis or asthma cannot help having their illnesses so don't be ashamed.  Depression is an illness that many people suffer from.  I do hope your family support you.  I find that if you get some books about your condition, and let them read them, they will have more understanding.  I know it is difficult for people who have never suffered from depression to know what you are feeling.  

I am here for you if you need someone to talk to.  I have had depression for a very long time, but medication is the only thing that helps me.  Some people have one bout and never have it again.

The Northern Ireland Association for Mental health most probably run groups in Belfast and i beleive they ran groups jointly with the local community mental health teams as well. Mind is another grouping which i'm sure has some groups in Belfast which maybe helpful. Rethink I'm not sure about.
