So long as you take your thyroid medication it won't contribute to any depression.  I think you have two things going on here, one is your children growing up and moving out.  This shows you've done your job well, but I know how sad it is.  When I was at that point I no longer felt needed, which is never the case.  They still need us, just differently.  It sounds like you're just not sure of what to do with yourself in your situation, and getting involved in something would be good for you.  Sitting in front of the TV will just make it worse, you need to be doing something that makes you feel like your helping others, and keeping your mind busy. Volunteer thru your church or other avenues where you can meet others.  Many of us have no relatives living near us, or most are deceased, so you've got to find friends outside the family.  I personally don't feel you're in a depression, but only a professional can tell you this.  You're going through
a time of adjustment, start looking at things you enjoy and start doing them.  Now is the time to also think about what you want to do when your third child leaves home.  It's a very good time for us as moms, we get to think about ourselves for a change. It's hard to see this right now, but you will one day.  You can't change the relative situation, but you can determine how you will deal with it, and live a happy life in spite of it.  Take care...

Hi,

I happened upon your post while doing a search for something on thyroid this morning and wanted to stop by and say hi.  If you ever need any support for thyroid issues, we're always here for you on our thyroid community.  As the above poster mentions, the change in environment and probably not your thyroid helped with your depression.  However, I wanted to mention that maybe at your next Dr. appt ask to have your Vitamin D levels checked.  Many of us on the thyroid community have had extermely low Vitamin D levels which have attiributed to some of our depression or low feelings.  Once they are back to normal levels, it has helped,

What are your TSH levels?  Thyroid, in itself, can cause many symptoms in people .. and the meds, if not on proper levels, can cause symptoms to worsen or new ones appear.

I had a partial thyroidectomy in '07 and doing fine on my Synthroid but had severely low Vit D last year that was uncovered after feelings of feeling down, joint pain, and similar hypo symptoms were present.  My TSH was fine but my vit D was 9 where 32-100 is normal.

You must talk to a Dr before adding Vit D in any significant levels because it can be toxic if taken w/o proper Dr instructions and followup bloodwork.

C~

also, how long has it been since you had your thyroid levels assessed? Your thyroid med might need an increase.
