unexplained weight loss

by janiscoma, Feb 14, 2009 08:21AM
I am currently going through a divorce.  Since separating from my husband, I have lost about 10 lbs even though I have made no changes to my eating/activity level.  10 lbs is a significant weight loss for me since I have a very small frame.  Also, the panic attcks I have sufferred from for many years have increased.  I know that weight loss can accompany other depressive symptoms, but can someone please explain to me what is physically going on in my body that causes this to happen?  It is baffling to me how I can be dropping weight like this!  Also, what can I do to stop this & regain the weight in a healthy way? Maybe I could just eat an entire pizza?? Ha ha just kidding :)

Hello, well i think that your weight loss is obviously due to nerves and stress.  Stress can do many things to your body, including weight loss.  Because of your panic attacks, your body is in overdrive all the time and i believe that could be the reason why ur losing weight.  Im sorry that ur going through a divorce.  Been there done that.  Try some high calorie milk shakes or ensure i believe is loaded with calories.  Good luck.

Do you have a psychiatrist at all? It sounds like you are internalizing your feelings, and you body is showing it instead. Having support is the best thing for you. Are on any meds for you panic attacks and feelings of depression. It's okay to ask for help, there are many meds which can help, especially since you've had a history of panic attacks, it's a miserable place to be in. If you don't have a pdoc, see if you can get a referral, but I would suggest you see your  regular doctor anyways.

There are many kinds of depression. Situational is one. You will get the same symptoms regardless of the type or how long it lasts. If you do not handle the stress emotionally, it takes it out on your body. If you continue to lose weight, it may be a good idea to visit your physician to help you thru temporarily.
