3 years of genital warts recurrence

by yaqui119, Oct 27, 2009 07:28PM
Hello,

A little background:

33yo male; healthy with no immuno-deficiency.  I take vitamins, excersize, get 8 hrs of sleep, don't smoke, etc

I was diagnosed with genital warts sometime in late 2006 and have been suffering from monthly recurrence ever since.  Typically, I recieve cryotherapy from the derm or treat them at home using an OTR wart remover (also cryo).  I have tried aldara after cryo but usually only until the warts are gone.

Thus, I was looking for some guidance as to what I should do next.  I am frustrated because my derm keeps telling me that once they get frozen off they should not return.  Problem is that they do.  Then the other derm in the office tells me I am stuck with them for life!

Should I try aldara even if I am all clear for 3-4 months to boost the immunity in the area to prevent them from returning?  Will this work?  Am I stuck with them for the rest of my life?  I keep hearing/reading that 18-24 months symptoms usually clear since the body gets stronger against the virus) but I am well beyond this.

What other options do I have?

To: yaqui119,

Hello,
To prevent frequent recurrence of genital warts, one can take medicines like Acyclovir, famciclovir, and valacyclovir. This is known as suppressive therapy and is very much effective in preventing recurrences. My advice is to consult a dermatologist and get it prescribed.
I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep us posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
