3 yr old rash on face

I noticed that my son three year old son has developed a rash on his face. It looks like little bumps all over his face, especially behind his ears, on his cheeks, and on his forehead. He keeps scratching those areas, also, so I know that it itches. It has progressively gotten worse (more bumps and redder) as the night has progressed. His grandparents kept him over the weekend, and he just got home this morning, so I do not know if he was exposed to something while he was there or not. Any ideas on what this could be and how I should treat it? Also, should I contact his doctor?
