4 yr Old Scabbing on Scalp (Afro Hair)

by Tianne2003, Jul 17, 2008 04:42AM
Dear Dr,

My 4 year old has been having a bout of hair problems. At first she had a little dry patch on the crown of her hair, I use to grease it with oil (being afro carribbean) then it started to get worse, so the GP gave me Polytar to use which made lumps start appearing on the crown. I stopped using that and was given Ketrocinzole (excuse the spelling)..it seemed to control it but then when I stopped using it she started getting puss spots at the root of the hair folicules, which then spread to the rest of the scalp. I was then given antibiotics which she had to have 2 courses of. This cleared up the pass but caused the hair to completely scab over. Very hard thick scab which clumped the hair together. I then took her to see a trichologist who has given me Bethadine ointment to try and remove the scabbing and Cade Oil mixed with Sulphur as a shampoo. I then took her to a dermatologist who contradicted what the trichologist said and gave polytar to use again (even after being told by the trichologist that polytar is not for afro hair and can worsen the condition). I was at an impasse who to listen to and just continued with the trichologist's treatment.

I have now seeked Chinese herbal medicine to wash her hair with as surely all these chemicals cannot be healthy for  a child as such a young age. The scabs are gradually falling off but now are leaving pink bald patches.  Will the hair ever grow back? How can I control this condition?
