9 months baby with atopic dermatitis

by Cami_coix, Nov 25, 2008 12:25PM
Hello, first of all, I am writing to you from Valparaíso, Chile, I am the mother of a little 9 months baby that suffers from this horrible desease, I have taken him to 3 diferent doctors, bust none has told me to tak my baby to a pedriatic inmunology specialist as otherplace told me to, in fact I called to amedical center here in Chele and the doctors secretary told me that this pediratic inmunologi specialist didn't treat atopic dermatitis babies. Is that right?, it is not a good idea for me to take my baby to a inmune pediatric specialist?, doe to the fact that atopic dermatitis is due to a inmune sistem alteration?

Atopic dermatitis is an immune system problem but it can only be treated their is no cure. Their is a good possibility that is something in your babies diet. Milk, soy, peanuts, gluten and eggs are typical causes. An elimination diet can solve the problem. The biggest thing is keeping the skin moist. Very few baths with a mild baby soap. Don't use laundry detergents with brighteners or fragrance. After bath apply a coat of Vaseline on affected area's.  This problem usually clears up in a year or so.
Few people suffer with it their whole life.
If you see a doctor the best one for this problem is a dermatologist. An immunologist can't help. Your primary doctor will give you steroids, try not to use them!  They can make things worse and form a dependency. The skin will get thin and require more powerful medications. For some people it is the only choice. But the majority can control with moisturizers.
