ADULT ACNE

Posted by Jamie on July 21, 1999 at 20:46:04
I am 22 years old (female)and have suffered from acne from the age of 12.  I have been on retin a, accutane (but had to get off quickly because of horrible side effects, tetracycline.  The acne is not as bad, but it is still there.  Why hasn't it gone away.  My brother had the same problem, but his went away he he became my age.  My skin is red is different areas, but mostly covering my face.  Is this due to the acne?  My brother's face has an even tone to it.  Is there any medications that I can take to cure the acne that won't make my face peel like the retin a.  Also I wear "base" makeup could this be causing the acne??  I would love to know what I can do about it because as you know it is embarrasing.  Thank you...Jamie

Jamie:
Although most people don't realize it, acne very often lasts well into the 20's.  Different family members can have different amounts of severity.
Makeup does not cause acne, especially if it is water-based or oil-free.
There are many medications which can help you, and they don't have to cause dryness.  You should consult a dermatologist.  Treatment may take several months, because acne responds slowly and needs sustained follow-up.  But if you work at it, you will stand a very good chance of success.  And you WILL grow out of acne, even if it isn't at age 20.
Don't give up!
