Accutane Effeciency On Non-Nodular Acne

Hello,

I'm looking for a derm's opinion on the effectiveness of Accutane on smaller acne heads.  My acne is on my face, neck, back, and chest.  There are not very many big acne heads (I have benzoyl peroxide5%, Differin 3%, and Minocyclin 100 mg twice a day).  These medications play a big part in my not having many big zits.

Anyways, I have lots of little acne heads all over.  How effective is Accutane at getting rid of these heads and keeping them off? (from your experience or from official sources)

Thanks!
-Luke

Hello,
Accutane is one of the most common drugs to be prescribed for treatment of acne. However it should be used under medical supervision and there are many side effects. Accutane increases the sensitivity of skin to sunlight and also causes hyperpigmentation as its side effect. Usually it goes away after you stop the medicine but it goes away very gradually and may take several months to go away. In some cases it is irreversible and may not go away.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Hello Luke,

For your acne, Just keep you face clean by washing with a mild soap atleast twice a day. Pat it dry and do not rub it. Avoid picking or pressing the acne. You can also use Benzoyl peroxide 5% lotion or gel which your doctor has prescribed once at bedtime. An amount of lotion the size of a pea should be enough to cover most of your face. If your skin becomes red or peels, you are using too much of the medicine or applying it too often.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I know lots about Accutane - I have researched it a lot.  I will keep you posted on my progress.

I've had acne for six years now.  I saw my pediatrician several years ago, and most recently in April concerning my acne.  He gave me several creams and minocycline.  I went to see a dermatologist the second week of June, he just renewed my minocycline, gave me benzoyl peroxide, and said to come back in two months.  I'm seeing him again August 14.  I'll keep you updated.

Thanks!
