Acid reflux or Digestive problems?

My grandfather is 84yrs old, he said he is experiencing some abdominal pain and assume it is some reaction with acid reflux?  I explained to him that with his age and other medical problems, it could be a number of issues. He has prostate, high blood pressure, and acid reflux that he is being treated for as we speak.  But he explains that the acid reflux is what he is assuming is the reason behind his newly shown symptoms. He states that he has some burning in his chest, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and can not digest his food well.  If anyone knows what any of these symptoms may indicate please respond.  Or if you could lead me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Hello,
From the symptoms it sounds like GERD(Gastroesophageal reflux disease). It is usually after eating a heavy fatty meal and sedantry lifestyle. It can also be caused by drinking too much alcohol, prolonged use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin or ibuprofen, or infection with bacteria such as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori).

Try raising the head of your bed about four inches with blocks. It also might help to avoid eating or drinking for two hours before you lie down. To help control the stomach acid, one should not drink alcohol or drinks with caffeine in them, or eat chocolate or spicy or greasy foods .

Also give him some OTC antacid like Mylanta. He can also take zantac(ranitidine)or prilosec(omeprazole). These will help. Also ask him to keep his fluid electrolyte balance optimum by drinking lots of fluids.

In case the symptoms persist then peptic ulcer disease has to be probed.Pls consult a gastroenterologist in that case.

I hope that helps. Please do keep me posted on how your grandfather is doing or if you have any additional doubts.Warm regards.

Also known as waterbrash.See,the covering of our stomach is built to resist acid but not the oesophgus which connects it from mouth to stomach. If the connecting valve is weak acid will come and regurgitate causing discomfort, burning, pain etc.Ask him not to lie down immedietly after food.A course of antacids will help, and frequent small bland feeds. If persists get a cardiogram just to make sure it is nothing other.
