Allergic Reaction to the Sun

Every time my friend is out in the sun he develops a blotchy type rash that itches immensely.  The rash usually develops only where the sun touches his skin.  Sometimes however it does move up under the clothing once the rash begins.  He usually breaks out on his arms and neck.  He has had this problem since he was very young and has been told it is a form of Lupus.  If he takes benadryl it usually eases the itching but it makes him so sleepy.  He would love to be out in the sun more but cannot stand the itching.  The rash is almost like huge welts and is red and blotchy.  He has tried sunscreen and it does not help.  Is there anything you can suggest?  I think he should see an allergist or a dermatologist to get a prescription or some tests run.  He does avoid the sun as much as possible and wears long sleeves and pants throughout the summer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Concerned Friend

Your friend may have either a form of lupus or a condition called polymorphous light eruption (PMLE.)  In either case, the body develops what amounts to an allergy to the long waves of ultraviolrt light (UVA.)  Sunscreens which block UVA as well as UVB are available and may help.  Antihistamies may help too, and if Bensadryl makes him sleepy, he should look into nonsedating ones (Allegra, Claritin), available by prescription.  Finally, there are techniques for "hardening" the skin to UV rays by means of light exposure to specialized light sources.  He sould look into a dermatology visit for evaluation.

Best.

Sun Poisoning:

This Saturday I was boating with my girlfriend.  Anyway after being in the sun for 5 hours, I got a sunburn.  After a couple of hours of delicate skin, I thought it would go away.  I went out and put on some cologne, then the next day I took a shower with cold water and some soap.

I had no idea that I would break out with the most unbearable
itching and irritation.  It is all over my chest and back.
The nurse at work told me it is sun poisoning and that it would go away if I applied Cortizone to my skin before going to bed, then addingDermoplast for quick relief.
However this seems to make it worse.
I have had sunburns before, I have lived in very hot countries, Spain, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, and have never experienced something like this.

Can you recommend any releif, prevention that will not entail any full medical intervention.
It's summer and i hope that I don't have to spend all of it locked in a dark room.

Thanks

Lately I have been going to the tanning salon... and I got a sunburn from it. One day later I started itching unbearabley all over my stomach, chest, and back. I have no clue what it is and would like to know if it is just sun poisoning? I have taken benedryl and put itch releif benedryl gel on, but nothing has seemed to work.
