Allergic to all lips balms I've tried - help.

by texan_in_colorado, Mar 13, 2009 02:51PM
I am looking for information on lip balms. About 5-6 years ago my lips became red and swollen then they became crusted over. It was painful and I was using a triple antibiotic cream. The dermatologist thought I was using Neosporne from the way it looked. I explained it had started a short time before and I was using the triple antibiotic cream to try to heal it. I am not certain what I am allergic to, and the dermatologist gave me Ultravate Cream 0.005% and suggested I just try the balms one by one, and one at a time that I had (after the condition cleared up) and if I broke out to put Ultravate on to heal it. That would save me from paying for the testing, and he was nice enough to give me several sample tubes. Currently I’m allergic to: Carmex, Blistex (regular, medicated, DCT), Burt’s Bees Wax, Alba Passion Fruit Nectar lip balm, Canus Goat’s Milk Lip Balm, to name a few. Also allergic to Aquaphor which the dermatologist had me using in between the medicine. It worked for about 2 years and then I broke out. After that I tried Cetaphil lotion and Vaseline. I also broke out with those and had to use the Ultravate.

Previously I looked at the ingredients and I wondered if it was lanolin I was allergic to, but with the names of some things it may be the exact same thing only a different name. With the Alba it looked all natural or organic, so I’m not certain what’s in there. Also it’s only on my lips I have the problem, I can use the Aquaphor or Cetaphil elsewhere and I’m fine but it was explained to me that the lips are a very thin layer of skin.

I am trying to find something that would somewhat protect my lips or at least help me to keep them in a health state. I had a friend suggest olive oil. I even thought of mineral oil because I don’t want to keep paying for each little tube. Ideas?

FYI I have had ecnezma (many times) and purigo (only once), but of course it was on my body.
