Anal itch

I'm a 21 yr.old female with itching and irritation between the buttocks and around the anus. There is also flaking of the skin. Most of the symptoms went away after a few days, but I'm now feeling the itch again. I'm too embarrased to go to my regular doctor - what's going on?!

Probably not much.  That area is very sensitive in both men and women.  Get some over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone, apply it twice a day and cover with Vaseline.  When the sensitivity subsides, stop and wait for any recurrence.  The condition comes and goes.  It is not infectious or contagious.  If the hydrocortisone burns a little, don't worry--it's part of the healing.  If this doesn't help, see a doctor in 2-3 weeks.  Don't be embarrassed--that's what doctors do!
