Armpit Problem, Please Help

by louie022, Dec 29, 2008 06:31PM
Hi, I have a rash in my left armpit that started out as small bumps then began to grow into scaly patches. These scaly patches then grew into patches that resemble a scab like if you scraped your elbow or knees (brownish in color and firm).  Eventually, these would fall off leaving normal skin underneath only to have it happen again shortly after.  I saw a dermotologist who said it looked like seborrhea and prescribed Clarifoam EF and Oxistat.  Neither of these seemed to do the trick and I have lost my health insurance and can't afford to go back to the doctor.  I haven't found anyone who seemed to describe what I have and i can't find any images of other irritations that look like mine (rosacea, eczema, etc.)  Any other ideas?  The rash doesn't itch or hurt, but it is unsightly and a nuissance.  Thank you very much.

Hello,

I cannot confirm anything without examination, but it sounds like hidradenitis suppurativa. Hidradenitis suppurativa is a skin disease that affects areas bearing apocrine sweat glands and hair follicles; such as the underarms, groin and buttocks esp in women.

Apply warm compresses on the lumps and keep the area clean. Topical antiseptic treatment and topical antibiotics such as mupirocin or neomycin containing ointment is very useful. If still the lumps persist then specific treatment like antibiotics, vit A supplements, corticosteroid injections, isotretinoin, antiandrogens and sometimes excision and drainage ,laser therapy and radiotherapy are found useful.I feel that you should consult a dermatologist and discuss these options with him.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.

Hi thanks for your help!  I looked into it and im pretty sure that its not it.  I do not have any fluids or drainage associated with this problem.  It basically starts out red, gets dry, gets brownish and scabby, then that flakes off and it starts all over again. Very strange.
