Armpit rash, internal problem?

Armpit rash, internal problem?

Hi Doc,

I have written you in the past and received good advice. A few times over the past 4 months or so, I have noticed skin irritation in my armpits. The rash is red, sometimes burns and looks like dermatitis. It isn't flaky and doesn't stay that long but it does itch sometimes. What could it be? I sweat a lot and sometimes the skin rubs together. I find i first notice it when i use deodorant and it burns a bit. It almost looks like what happens between my thighs after I work out where the skin gets really red and weepy. It goes away quick if i put on antibiotic ointment. Usually the rash is on both underarms but sometimes only one. I work out a lot too and sweat quite a bit. This has concerned me lately, as I hadn't noticed it happening as much. Could this be a sign of anything serious like an internal illness that I should be worried about? What do you think?

Thanks Dr. I appreciate your site and the advice you give to help people.

No, I think you have eczema, nothing internal or infectious.  Try over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone and moisture lotion twice a day each while you wait to see a skin doctor for definitive diagnosis.  Eczema comes and goes, so you'll want a prescription to use from time to time, but antiperspirants just make it red and don't cause it, so you can use anyone you want.

Best.
