Body Lice

Body Lice

Hi,

I was diagnosed about three weeks ago with body lice.  This was misdiagnosed for three months so I ended up with an acute infestation that also included my scalp.  I took a sample to the ER where they confirmed body lice.  Prior to that, a derm gave me elimite and this failed twice.  The ER gave me Lindane and this also failed twice.  I was cleared by my regular GP and derm but had another outbreak today.  I noticed a nymph on my face this morning so i went to urgent care where they gave me malathion.  There are no refills for this but I read it is recommeded to do a second treatment.  My husband has been treated and is clear.  My environment is clean, I sweep, mop, do laundry in hot water, and vacuum daily.  I also have bug bombed twice now.  I also sweep out my car after every use and have bug bombed that twice..  The urgent care doctor just kind of brushed me off and the nurse didn't want to be around me.  I was told this came from India or from a stray cat that we adopted.  We no longer have pets in the house.  My derm has basically brushed me off too.  If this next treatment fails. what other type of doctor can I see?  Or is there something else that I can do?  All my clothes are baggged as well as my husbands.  They are washed within 24 hours of wearing and I mean everything.

Hello,

According to CDC(centre of disease control), Intense itching (“pruritus”) and rash caused by an allergic reaction to the louse bites are common symptoms of body lice infestation. It is good that you are washing the Clothing, bedding, and towels in hot water and drying them in sun after machine drying them. Topical permethrin or Lindane cream may again be needed which are available by prescription only. I suggest you to get it prescribed from your dermatologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your dermatologist. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
