Brown patch on elbow

Brown patch on elbow

Hello Dr.,

I have a light brown patch on the side of my elbow that has many small clear colored bumps in it. I have had it for many years and it has faded and diminished over time. I always thought it was harmless until I recently read about xanthomas from high cholesterol sometimes appearing on elbows.  I am a 39 year old female who does have controlled high cholesterol, but I do not believe it's the familial type.  Could this brown patch of skin with bumps be related to my cholesterol?

Thanks for your help!

Xanthomas are usually yellowish, and if they're due to increased serum cholesterol, they would be expected to be in many places, not just in one.  Also, your cholesterol is being monitored  and your cholesterol  is under control.

If you're concerned, I suggest you show the spot to your doctor, so you won't have to worry.

Take care.
