Bumps and Swelling

Four small bumps appeared on my upper lip yesterday. Both lips were dry and itchy. I put some hydrocortisone on the upper lip but it started to burn so I washed both lips and placed Vaseline on them and went to bed. This morning I awoke and found the bumps still there and the upper lip swollen. I dont know what is happening, please help me.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
From the symptoms it can be due to allergic reaction, insect bites or cold sores. A cold sore is caused due to HSV1. Pain, burning, tingling, or itching occurs at the infection site before the sores appear. Then clusters of blisters erupt which break down. You need to get some investigations like sample from the sores to identify the virus, culture analysis, Tzanck smear, antigen and antibody studies and blood sampling for antibody studies done to confirm the diagnosis. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Thanks alot Dr. Kaur.

On September 18, 2010, a day after I posted the message the swelling had gone and the small bumps had dried up. (three days from start to disappearance of the symptoms)

I have taken note of all your suggestions and ironically all of them may be possible so I will definitely have to visit my family physician. I had been eating alot of canned food in the days prior to the bumps, and I am also experiencing a severe 'ant' problem at home due to the hot temperatures. I live in the Caribbean so the weather has been a bit unstable lately. I am hoping that there is no recurrence, as my lips are still dry.

I will keep you posted on my doctor's revelations when I visit next.

Again, your assistance is greatly appreciated and the HSV1 notation really scared me so am definitely gonna get a checkup.
