Burning lips

My lips have had a burning sensation for 18 months now.  Seems it started after spending a weekend in the sun.  Went to a dermotologist two months into it, she looked at my lips and said I don't see anything and prescribed some hydrocortisone cream.  Seems to get better and worse.  I do smoke and drink.

Any suggestions????

Still have this problem with my lips Dr's are no help.

Now my girlfriend complains of burning lips after Kissing me.

Could there be acid or some kind of enzyme causing this?

Thanks Dr.!  I have consulted physicians, dermatologist and Ear nose and throat Dr.  The first two Dr's said they didn't see anything the ENT Dr. suggested that I might be dehydrated from alcohol consumtion.

I think women that I have kissed experience burning lips afterwards.  I started thinking about this and woner if my saliva is acidic, I wonder if my whole body is acidic.  After I deficate the skin around my anus can also burn.

At first I was worried I might be contagious with a virus or bacteria but that wouldn't last for 18 months would it?

I have an appointment with a physician in 3 days, I'll mention it to him.

Hello,
Firstly, It can be due to vit B deficiency. Take some vitamin B complex for some days and see if your symptoms improve.
Secondly, it can be due to atopic dermatitis or eczema("Atopic" refers to a group of diseases where there is often an inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever). Cheilitis(Inflammation of the skin on and around the lips)is often seen in atopic dermatitis. Diagnosed by bld test like RAST. Treatment is by topical steroids or oral therapy of corticosteroids in severe cases.

Avoid licking the lips as saliva evaporates quickly resulting in them being drier than before. Drink plenty of water and take multivitamin supplements and do not apply lipstick or other cosmetic products for some days. Use a humidifier to moisturize the air in your home and apply shea butter or Vaseline on your lips. If the symptoms persist then you can also apply the steroid cream prescribed by you dermatologist.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
