Can I use salicylic acid while I am pregnant?

by Kristyn, Nov 29, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Dr.,
I have been experiencing acne since I became pregnant. I am in my 19th week. I saw a commercial for neutragena's skin clearing makeup. It contains salicylic acid. Is it okay to use this makeup while pregnant? Please let me know.
Thank you,
Kristyn

Kristyn:

Although the Neutrogena product is probably fine, you're better off avoiding salicylic acid during pregnancy.  I would stick with a nonmedicated cleanser or detergent bar (like Dove, or regular Neutrogena, or Basis).  If needed, your doctor can prescribe topical erythromycin gel while you are pregnant.

Good luck.
