Can hydrocortisone damage be fixed

by death, Aug 23, 2005 12:00AM
Dear Doc
About 3 1/2 months ago I used my roomated laundry detergent and acquired a a bad rash on my penis.  The rash was on the side and the head of the penis.  I decided to apply hydrocortisone cream on the affected areas. I believe it was 2%. I was very upset about the rash and applied the cream liberaly on the areas without knowing the consequences of using too much hydrocortisone cream.  After about a week and a half, the head of my penis and the glans got really dried out and shiny along with the side.  The skin peeled and was very sore in certain areas.  I used antibiotic cream to heal it up.  The problem I face now is that there are stretch marks on the side of penis and redness on the head of the penis.  There are also tiny bumps all over the head of the penis that look like pictures I have seen of Keratinization.  During an erection the bumps look like ballooned glans and I find it very disturbing.  After masturbation when the penis returns flacid, the bumps look very bad and the head looks wrinkiled with red marks.  My biggest concern is that it looks kind of like herpes and I don't want to have to convince girls that I don't have an std the rest of my life.  I saw a dermatologist and he said it was normal but it was never like this months ago.  He had said that sometimes the vessels dialated but he never said if it would go back to normal.  Someone mentioned a Bentonite bath but I'm not sure if that will worsen the damage or not.  Will this eventually heal, will the bumps ever go away?  I am really worried and I want to know if there is anything that can be done to restore my damaged penis?  I've been very depressed and I just want things to go back to normal.  Has the Hydrocortisone done permanent damage or will it heal itself over time. Please help me!

OK, I'll try.  First of all, hydrocortisone can't cause permanent damage.  Temporary use doesn't generally cause any damage either.  You probably saw some irritation, which you thought was damage.  If your dermatologist thinks your penis looks normal, then the changes that concern you are probably just minor variants that you never noticed before because you had no reason to look so hard.  This will probably seem unlikely to you, but I frankly can't think of what else they could be.  If so, there really isn't any way to get rid of them.  If your partners think it's herpes, you'll just have to tell them otherwise, because it isn't.  My best advice is to stop looking at your penis and get on with your life.

Best.
