Cheilosis

I have been told there is no cure for Cheilosis.  Is this true? I have seen one dematologist who told me there was nothing she could do for my condition.  She did however, give me "Aclovate Ointment, 0.05%" and told me to get an OTC product "CortiBalm".  I used these two products for over 1 1/2 years to receive some relief but never completely cleared it up.

This past March (2006) the Cheilosis worsened.  I now have cracks not only in the corners of my mouth but also down into my face.  The area is very red and burns.  Also, my lips swell and burn.  After seeing three (3) regular M.D.'s I'm currently using only Vaseline petroleum jelly on these areas.

PLEASE HELP.  I am at a loss for what to do now.  Not only is this painful but I am embarassed to be seen in public looking like this.  If I try to cover it up with makeup it only increases the pain and discomfort.

Cheilitis refers to eczema of the lip.  Like all eczema, it can generally be controlled, not cured.  On rare occasions, an actual allergy is involved.  Perhaps your doctor can consider performing these or referring you for them, in view of the severity of your discomfort.  Even if it can;t be cured, however, it should be possible to suppress the inflammation enough with regular treatment to keep the lips from looking embarrassing.  Check with your doctor about other modes of treatment.

Best.
