Spitting up, but I can't recall ever seeing a case, and I've seen a lot of cold sores. Also, if you can't see any obvious blisters, then even if he's right and it is a cold sore (and sometimes people interpret tingling as an active lesion that never materializes), it isn't likely to be very transmissible even by direct contact.
I think you'll be fine. But you may want to sit farther away . . .
