Cold sore (risk of spreading when dormant)

by thunderlimbs, May 05, 2006 12:00AM
My girlfriend gets cold sores every so often and when she has an outbreak we do not kiss until the sores have healed and disappeared.  I've tested negative for hsv1 and 2.  What are the odds of the virus spreading to me when there are no sores present through kissing?  I know that for most people hsv1 isn't a big deal, but since i don't have it i want to avoid it.. Please advise.

The odds are small.  It's possible that you'll get it despite your efforts, but what you're doing is the right thing.  Once the sores dry up, they contain very little virus.

Best.
