Continuous Itching in Groin

Continuous Itching in Groin

Beginning in July 2003 I was diagnosed with scabies, ringworm and folliculitis in succession.  I was treated by a dermatologist for each as they occurred and each appears to have been resolved.  My problem is that I continue to suffer from itching around the groin.  The itching is most intense on the scrotum and the base of the penis.  At times it has also involved the anal opening [although this seems to have subsided].  The itching is not accompanied by any type of rash or spots etc. that I can detect.  It tends to flare up and dissapate.  I have noticed it is most intense in the early A.M.  I have been very careful to wash thoroughly and dry, wear loose clothing [boxers]and I have been using Pramasone lotion and OTC jock itch powder to limited effect.  I am very frustrated that this itching continues despite over 6 months of various treatment and would welcome your thoughts on the matter.

Perianal itching is very common.  It can suppressed (creams, powders, etc.) but not eliminated.  I think your three recent groin-related diagnoses have nothing to do with it, although they may have sensitized both your skin and your mind to the itching.  I advise you to ask your doctor for treatment for the anal itch, treat that when needed and ignore it otherwise.   One cream I've found useful is vioform-hydrocortisone 1%--ask the doctor about this or a similar cream.

Best.
