Dark circular patches around the neck...

by John Kane, Jul 23, 2000 12:00AM
Dear Dr.,

I am a 31 year old African American who works as a driver in Los Angeles, CA and I attend school after work. For a while now I have had a problem with quarter size circular patch on the back of my neck.  They are somewhat raise, but very little, and the skin on the circles has a different texture than the rest of my skin.  There are three (3) circles on the back of my neck that appeared gradually, and at one time they use to fade.  Since I started driving they seem to be getting darker, and won't go away.  Could this be stress relted?  What might I have and how can this disorder be treated?  Thank you.

John:

Most likely, you have a mild fungus clled tinea versicolor.  It's not contagious, and quite common.  Try OTC clotrimazole 1% cream from your drugstore, twice a day for 10 days.  If that doesn't do it, I suggest you see a doctor.

This condition often recurs, bu the next time you get it, you'll recognize it yourself.

Best.
