Darkened Patches

I have two areas to discuss.  #1 I have an area aproximately the size of an inch below my right eye that is darkened pigmentation that developed 2 years ago when I was pregnant with my son.  It has not faded?  Any idea what it is and if it can be removed or treated?  Secondly, after tanning last week I noticed on both thighs that I have blotchy skin.  It is not red, it looks as if some areas are darker or more pigmented than others.  It doesn't look like white patches rather it resembles darkened patches instead.  Do you think it is from the tanning bed or should I have it checked out?  It has never happened before that is why I am asking.  I am 28 yrs old and have good general health.

Pigmentation on the face of a young woman like yourself is usually hormone-related, though not necessarily to pregnancy or the pill.  I think you should have this evaluated by a dermatologist, who would be in the best position to recommend treatment.  Available options include bleaching creams containing hydroquinone, Retin-A, chemical peels or laser.  Creams would be easisest and the place to start.

As to blotchiness appearing soon after tanning, I can't think of an obvious explanation.  While you're getting #1 evaluated, ask about #2.

And by the way, how about limiting or avoiding tanning?
