Darker cheek skin coloration

The left cheek of my niece (age 26 and lives in India)has noticable darker discoloration due to the fact that while she was a young child the cheek got burnt from the hot oil. Facial surgery was postponed at that early age for later years with the thinking that it may not be required or will be better to perform when she is an adult. However the oil-scar is quite visible at this stage and cosmetic surgeons, at least in India, won't gurantee that it will get better with surgery. Or, for that matter,that it would not get worse. My niece is looking into alternatives to surgery so that her facial appearance is restored (or at least is better than what it is now). Are there any treatments (creams etc.) that she could try? Also, what is your opinion about cosmetic surgery?

Pigment changes in dark-skinned individuals are difficult to address.  In general, surgical procedures are best avoided, if the only issue is pigment.  Even noninvasive techniques, such as laser, may lead to mottling, blotchiness, or even darkening of the already discolored area.

Medications which help lighten discoloration include hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, and tretinoin (Vitamin A derivatives.)  These are available worldwide.  Other options include superficial to medium depth chemical peels with agents like trichloroacetic acid.  Also, covering makeups are useful for some circumstances, as are sunscreen preparations to help prevent further darkening.

I suggest consulting with a physician experienced in all these modes, and starting with noninvasive methods, like creams, first.
