I was recently diagnosed with HSV-1.  However it was in the genital area.  It this still considered genital herpes or was it just transferred sexually.  I am married and have been for 2 years.  He is the only person I have been with for 5 years now.  The symptoms are gone now after a 10 day treatment of valtrex and i feel better.  How long do I need to wait to have sex again with my husband.  Also I know have a rash on my upper legs, some onmy arms and sides.  They itch a little bit.  Please help!!!

Hi,

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease  caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. However, HSV-1 can also cause genital herpes, but it more commonly causes infections of the mouth and lips. HSV-1 infection of the genitals can be caused by oral-genital or genital-genital contact with a person who has HSV-1 infection. Genital HSV-1 outbreaks recur less regularly than genital HSV-2 outbreaks.

Persons with this condition should abstain from sexual activity with uninfected partners when symptoms of herpes are present. Even if a person does not have any symptoms he or she can still infect sex partners. It is also recommended to have partners be tested to determine if they are infected with HSV.

Take care and keep us posted.

Hi,

Itching of the arms could be due to atopic dermatitis, xerosis or dry skin and brachioradial pruritus. The latter involves itching on the upper arms, neck and shoulder blades related to sun exposure and nerve damage of the upper spine. Atopic dermatitis is also a very common cause of itching behind the knees. Pruritic rashes of the knees and elbows is commonly caused by psoriasis and dermatitis herpetiformis. Antihistamine may provide relief of the pruritus. Avoid manipulating the lesions to prevent infection.

Are there other signs or symptoms present? Do you have  history of allergies? It is best to see your doctor for proper evaluation and management. Take care and regards.
